School Streets

School Streets are street closures around schools that create safer, more welcoming spaces by limiting car access at school drop-off and pick-up times. These projects help reduce traffic congestion and improve safety around schools, while giving kids more outdoor space to play, learn, and thrive.

School Streets have become a popular approach in cities around the world, including New York and Paris, where schools have transformed nearby streets into more pedestrian-friendly spaces. 

Civic Joy Fund has piloted School Streets at two San Francisco schools, closing streets outside Tenderloin Community Elementary and ER Taylor to cars for a few hours after dismissal. 

The result? A little more room for kids to be kids. Students and families enjoyed chalk art, bike lessons, a science fair, live music, and other recreational opportunities.

A Green Streets project

Green Streets is an emerging initiative of the Civic Joy Fund that reimagines underutilized public spaces. This growing network of experimental green spaces connects San Franciscans to their neighborhood villages, and to each other.
