School Streets
School Streets make more space for families by opening streets for play during after school hours. They envision a city where the schoolyard blends into the neighborhood, improving street safety and creating nature play opportunities in the process.
School Streets have become a popular approach in cities like Paris and New York, where schools have transformed nearby streets into lush, local amenities.
Civic Joy Fund piloted School Streets in partnership with the Bike Coalition at two San Francisco schools, programming the streets outside Tenderloin Community Elementary School and ER Taylor for a few hours after dismissal.
The result? A little more room for kids to be kids. Students, parents, and teachers had room to sit and play, enjoying chalk art, bike lessons, live music, and even a science fair.
