Cole Valley Pop-Up Town Square

Greetings from the Cole Valley Pop-up Town Square!

This space was created in response to neighbors asking a simple yet profound question: “what if our neighborhood had a town square?”

The answer appeared as an extension of Richard Gamble Memorial Park. This space is small, heavily used, and bisected by a train. Located at the heart of a small and bustling neighborhood, it was clear it could benefit from a little added breathing room. The Pop-Up Town Square aims to provide just that. Modernizing Richard Gamble Memorial Park is critical, and the addition of a town square would provide flexible space for the community, and an added impetus to invest in the park.

Be sure to email your city representatives your thoughts, and fill out this survey to provide feedback!

What’s new?

November 18-21

This November, the Cole Valley Pop-Up Town Square will return to the neighborhood for 4 days, coinciding with the final Cole Valley Night Market of the year!

June 12-15

With the success and support from the first two pop-ups, the Pop-Up Town Square returned for the June 12 Cole Valley Night Market and stuck around through the weekend with programming hosted by Cole Valley neighbors! The full calendar of events included 14 events including kids karaoke, a latte art class, and more.

April 17 & May 15

The Cole Valley Pop-Up Town Square made its debut coinciding with the Cole Valley Night Market.

As the name implies, Pop-up Town Squares are temporary projects designed to test the potential of underused spaces. They give people a chance to see how a parking lot or alley could become a welcoming town square with the simple addition of things like greenery and seating.

Whether it be a bike track or a lending library, by trying things out, getting feedback, and making changes along the way, we can work with neighbors to shape a space that reflects what their neighborhood wants and needs.

Ultimately, the future of any Pop-Up Town Square is up to you! If a space resonates with the community, then additional pop-ups (and even a more permanent space) will be considered, but only to the extent that it’s embraced by its neighbors.

A Green Streets project

Green Streets is an emerging initiative of the Civic Joy Fund that reimagines underutilized public spaces. This growing network of experimental green spaces connects San Franciscans to their neighborhood villages, and to each other.
