Bernal Heights Pop-Up Town Square

Greetings from the Bernal Heights Pop-up Town Square!

A slate of new amenities is arriving on the blacktop at the Bernal Heights Rec Center. There are trees to provide shade, plenty of seating, and a Nature Exploration Area for kids to enjoy. You’ll also find a newly painted bike track and plenty of greenery to make the space more inviting for kids and adults alike.

In light of the ongoing playground closure, this project aims to provide a new resource for families, as well as a preview of what’s in store for the future of this site.

As the name implies, Pop-up Town Squares are designed as pilot projects. This iterative approach helps everyone understand the impact of the potential of the space, as well as foster community buy-in and local stewardship. By creating opportunities to test, modify, and improve the amenities that are on site, we can work together to ensure that this space is a reflection of the neighborhood’s needs and desires.

This iteration of the town square is part of an engagement process to see how different improvements to the space resonate with the community. It’s an opportunity to try out different layouts, amenities, and materials, in hopes of sparking a conversation about blacktop the neighborhood has been dreaming about.

In Partnership with the Green Street Fund

Pop-up Town Squares is part of the Green Street Fund, an initiative from the Civic Joy Fund to nurture public spaces that connect San Francisco’s neighborhood villages.
